Leaders lost an opportunity to impose severe sanctions on Israel

Today Canada, Australia, France, Germany, New Zealand and the United Kingdom presented a joint statement on the situation in the West Bank

Statement by the leaders on the situation in the West Bank:

Unfortunately, the leaders didn't take the opportunity to impose severe sanctions against Israel. Recall that last weekend, 200 senior Canadian diplomats sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney urging Canada to impose "robust" sanctions on Israel.

Theirs core Demands were:

  • Review trade: Evaluate the Canada-Israel free trade agreement and suspend it if conditions do not improve.
  • Target illegal settlements: Take legal action against Canadian companies aiding West Bank settlements and revoke the charitable status of organizations funding the Israeli military.
  • Support International Law: Offer "unequivocal support" for actions taken by the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
