Cape Town - John Mitchell has reportedly been handed a two-year extension to his contract as England's defence coach.

The Telegraph revealed on Thursday that the Rugby Football Union extended Mitchell's contract until 2021 as part of their coaching succession plan.

The 55-year-old former All Blacks coach initially joined England on a deal that was set to run until the end of the 2019 World Cup.

According to the English publication, the new terms of his contract suggest Mitchell could be first in line to replace outgoing head coach Eddie Jones, who is set vacate his position in 2021.

Mitchell joined England's ranks last year after quitting as executive of rugby at the Bulls after just a season in charge.
